Taunet Nelel Youth Department

As an incorporated community organization in Melbourne, Taunet Nelel is comprised of several departments that work collaboratively with one another. In this way, it ensures the interests of its members and the community at large are protected

The youth department strives to foster a sense of
community among all youth.

An overview of the goals of Taunet Nelel Youth Department is provided below.

Fostering Inclusive Participation

  • Establish a Youth Advisory Council: Establish a formal group of youth representatives who will speak on behalf of their peers' needs, interests, and ideas. To effectively represent the community, diversity of age, gender, cultural background, and ability should be ensured

  • Use surveys and digital platforms (such as Google Forms) to gather feedback on programs and activities. Demonstrate your commitment to listening to your customers' feedback by taking action

  • Organize regular meetings where youth can discuss their concerns, propose ideas and feel heard.

Design Relevant and Engaging Programs

  • Needs Assessment: Conduct focus groups or one-to-one interviews with youth to determine their specific needs and interests (e.g., mental health support, career guidance, cultural activities, and recreational opportunities).

  • Coordinate with the sports department to plan sporting events, recreation, fitness classes or outdoor adventures to promote physical fitness.

  • Community Service Projects: Encourage participation in community service activities (e.g., environmental cleanups, charity drives) to foster civic responsibility in youth

Prioritize Mental Health and Well-Being

  • Access to Support Services: Collaborating with the mental health department to provide free counselling, workshops, or peer support groups.

  • Safe Spaces: Establish an environment where youth are comfortable discussing family issues, economic pressures, and academic challenges.

Build Leadership and Empowerment Opportunities

  • Mentorship Programs: Recruit mentors from the community and older peers to guide youth in the pursuit of their professional and personal goals

  • Leadership Training: Provide youth with workshops on goal setting, teamwork, and decision-making to prepare them for leadership roles within the organization

  • Youth-Led Initiatives: Encourage youth to design and lead their own projects, such as podcasts, community murals, or fundraising events. Provide them with resources and guidance while providing them with guidance

Leverage technology and social media.

  • Digital Engagement: Utilize social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, or WhatsApp to share updates, promote events, and engage youth in a space they are already active in.

  • Youth Content Creators: Engage youth in the creation of content (e.g., blogs, videos, or social media posts) to promote the organization's work and share their experiences.

Recognize and Celebrate Achievements

  • Award Systems: Recognize participants, leaders, or participants who complete specific programs by giving them certificates, badges, or small rewards

  • Showcase Success Stories: Showcasing the accomplishments of youth through newsletters, social media, or community events to inspire others.

  • Annual Youth Gala: Organize an event in celebration of the accomplishments of youth, featuring performances, speeches, or exhibitions.
